vijai nathan

i went to see indian comedienne, vijai nathan, on saturday night. she gave a benefit performance for chai - an organization that works primarily with the south asian community on issues of mental health and wellness education.

i saw her about 4 years ago when she did her nice girls don't but indian girls do tour, and have been waiting for her to come around again. in her "nice girls show" the jokes were more racy - she talked alot about sex and dating in america as the daughter of very conservative indian immigrants.

on her current tour, McGoddess: Big Macs, Karma, & the American Dream, she talked more about family and religion, and especially about her dad whom she lost recently. i spoke to her after the show and told her i had lost my dad awhile back and that i was touched by that part of her performance. she gave me a hug and i thought that was very sweet of her. it was a good show, and i loved how she really put herself out there - talking about all kinds of things. she seems very genuine and i would definitely go see her again.

kinda racy - but funny - joke:

summer whites

for everyone who wonders why i'm always looking for white flowers - u might want to check out the new issue of living magazine - they have an entire article about white gardens -

"...gardeners use white magic to cast irresistible spells: bouncing sunshine into shadows, snaring moonbeams, cooling down heat waves, coaxing tense psyches to chill out."

nice kitchen

i dragged my friend again to ikea on sunday. and though she's gone there before with me, this time it occurred to me that she might not like the place as much as i do. she knows and loves antiques, talks about things like character, appreciates darker woods, and loves - i feel queasy just saying it - warm earth tones. lets just say she's the sunny sky to my overcast moody grays.

but as we were walking around looking at the some of the more traditionally styled kitchens, i realized that i kind of like the country look too - i think they call it modern country -- simple furnishings, lots of light neutrals, and a more relaxed vibe. i think this kitchen is great and exemplifies what i'm talking about. it's a marriage of minimalist palette and traditional furnishings, a balance of old and new, someplace to meet in the middle and have a great time -- just like you'd want to do with good friends.

mirror mirror

this weekend i finally installed a magnifying mirror i had bought awhile ago. i had stayed in a hotel where they had one, and it really made life easier when putting on my makeup and tweezing my eyebrows and stuff. i also kind of like how it looks - kind of hotel chic and modern. and it's neat b/c the arm swivels pretty far out, and the mirror tilts to whatever angle you need. its just cool, i like it.

fiscally responsible fat fashion

i hate being a big girl. and when i shop at lane bryant (and no, i'm not going to link to them) i hate it even more. the prices are just ridiculous. last year when i was about to go on vacation i bought 3 t-shirts @ $39 each, so it cost me $120 just for the top half of my body to look presentable. they are such a screaming rip off - i can't stand it. its not like i don't have a hard enough time as it is: i hate shopping for clothes, then the ordeal of searching through racks and shelves just to find something halfway decent, and then having to practically sell an organ just to buy an outfit - just sucks all around. but a few nights ago i saw some cute stuff at walmart, and i stocked up -- for the price of those dumb 3 t-shirts i got 14 (!) cute tops for summer to kick around in!

lane bryant on the left $29. walmart on the right $8.88. dare i say i think the walmart one is actually cuter...

national arboretum

a few weeks ago i went to the national arboretum with a couple of friends for the first time. we went to the plant sale and i picked up some stevia and apple mint, and i got a free spearmint plant that wasn't doing so good. then we went on a walk through the lilac garden - it was a bit hot and not too much in bloom, we saw the azaleas and a pretty fountain. i also saw this gorgeous lace bark tree that i thought was just so rare, and marvelous, and then the very next day in the pier one parking lot i saw one just like it. though i have to say, the one at the arboretum was really beautiful and huge. i just loved that tree.

we saw lots of cute inchworms -

and i collected these seed pods (?) which i thought were just so pretty.

hello may!

i tried to squeeze in some basic gardening this weekend - mostly weeding and cleaning pots, and then i saw this little birdie in my backyard. i don't think about birds much, but now i'm thinking i should probably get a bird feeder or two...
